Immigrant Child Health

Pediatricians Play a Special Role

Immigrant families are racially and ethnically diverse, and immigrate for variety of reasons that may include seeking economic opportunity, reuniting with family, fleeing war or violence.

Pediatricians can play a special role in supporting the health and well-being of immigrant children in the United States. By recognizing the unique challenges and strengths that many immigrants experience, pediatricians can identify effective practice strategies and relevant resources that support health within the community.

Due to the increase in immigration enforcement and the significant instability this is creating for immigrant families and communities, it is more important than ever to stay up to date regarding current immigration information. See the following resources to support immigration health and rights (updated January 2026).

Know Your Rights

The National Immigration Law Center has information for health care providers and immigration enforcement. Know your rights and your patients' rights.

New Mexico-Specific Resources

Visit the National Immigration Legal Services Directory to find a list of New Mexico-based organizations that provide immigration legal services.

Updates Regarding "Protected" Areas

During the Biden administration, places such as churches, schools, and hospitals were deemed protected areas from immigration enforcement. On January 20, 2025, the Trump administration rescinded this policy. Visit the Rescission of Protected Areas Policies page of the National Immigration Law Center website to learn more.

Understanding Employer Rights and Obligations

Employers are always permitted to comply with ICE agents, but are only required to comply with agents under specific circumstances. Understand your rights and obligations during an ICE raid.

Guidance Regarding Warrants

Government officials must have a person’s permission OR a court warrant – a document signed by a judge – before they can enter your home. ICE warrants are ICE forms signed by ICE officers and do NOT give them permission to enter a person’s home without their consent. The following links provide samples of a court warrant vs. an ICE warrant.
